Deseret Digital Media (DDM) is seeking a strong mid to senior level Search Relevance Software Engineer to join our technology team to collaboratively build excellent search experiences with highly relevant results, great, feature-rich UX, and analytics to measure how successful we are.


Search Relevance Software Engineers on this team are tasked with solving problems and building search solutions across all of DDM's products including KSL News, KSL Classifieds, theMemories, and Utah.com. They will work on a scrum team with a product owner, scrum master, QA and other engineers to prioritize and build search improvements and features. They will regularly check the performance of the search experiences on production and work to improve them.



  • 2 or more years of experience working on search/ranking/relevance problems
  • 2 or more years of current experience with search and software technologies and tools including:

ElasticSearch or Solr
PHP or Node
HTML, CSS, JavaScript
MySQL or MongoDB

  • Understanding of different relevance and ranking metrics such as Okapi BM25, MRR, NDCG, ERR, precision@n, judgement lists, etc.
  • Able to integrate with third-party APIs to pull data or manage workflows
  • Experience designing, developing, and operating highly performant applications
  • Ready to take on full ownership of the development lifecycle by designing, building, and operating applications
  • Comfortable communicating with product owners, analysts, and other engineers to solve open-ended problems
  • Driven by results at the product, team, and individual levels
  • Desire to experiment and use data to drive decision-making
  • Excited to learn and collaborate with others.


Nice To Haves

  • Experience with recommendation engines and personalization of search results
  • Familiarity with machine learning opportunities such as Learning to Rank
  • Experience making front-end applications and UIs with technologies like React.js or Vue
  • Experience working with PHP frameworks such as Symfony, Laravel, or Zend
  • Using mobile technologies such as iOS, Android, and React Native
  • Experience working with Agile/Scrum methodology and use of issue tracking (Pivotal Tracker or similar) and source repository (git or similar) technologies
  • Writing unit and integration tests to help maintain a high degree of confidence
  • Experience optimizing and working with high traffic web sites using caching and scalability technologies
  • CS or IT Bachelor's or Master's degree a plus but not required
