The Data Scientist III uses statistic, programming and machine learning techniques to analyze product, revenue, advertising, social and sales data to discover, predict, communicate and create opportunities for operational and product improvement.  Reporting to the Director of Analytics, this person will be a key member of the Data Analytics department which works across all product teams within Deseret Digital Media, including KSL Classifieds, KSL Cars, KSL Homes, KSL Jobs, and KSL.com News.  This person will be integral in all aspects of data management, including data strategy, capture, standardization, extraction, transformation, analysis, simulation, learning, visualization and presentation. As a member of the Data-Analytics team, she/he will assist analyst, engineers and product owners with the adoption of machine learning and other data science practices.  As business needs evolve, the data scientist III will ensure that data strategy, technologies and methodologies are current and that analysis drives business value.


Duties of this position:

  • Work with assigned teams to identify data opportunities and perform analysis requirements

  • Work with assigned engineers to develop algorithms, models and software

  • Provide stakeholders with recommendations and solutions from analysis outcomes

  • Provide regular reports to support the evolving business needs of Product Managers, Sales, and other team members

  • Simple data extraction using web-based reporting applications (Google Analytics, SalesForce, Doubleclick For Publishers)

  • Advanced data extraction using SQL with Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, MongoDB. Working with structured, unstructured and nested datasets

  • Understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics

  • Ability to perform statistical analysis in R; import, wrangle, structure, analyze and visualize

  • Ability to write, document and successfully deploy custom functions in R  

  • Use of Jupyter Notebooks /Google DataLab to document extraction, transformation, analysis, simulation, learning and visualization

  • Use statistical and data science techniques such as regression, correlation,  distribution, significance, Monte-Carlo simulations, neural networks, decision trees, attribution modeling, geo-spatial analysis, lift modeling, yield optimization and more to perform comprehensive analyses that produce predictive and prescriptive business insights

  • Perform predictive and prescriptive analysis. Analyze behaviors, patterns and relationships.

  • Work with product teams to build models that test hypothesis, determine probabilities, risks and simulates potential outcomes

  • Ability to write programs that utilize Google TensorFlow to enable and perform machine learning

  • Build solutions to improve user experience, product features, client solutions and business revenue

  • Produce accurate work and meet assigned deadlines


Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced competency in Python, R, and SQL

  • Expert in data science techniques including neural networks, clustering, predictive modeling, etc.

  • Expert in statistical methods, e.g. regression, modeling, program measurement, time series, distribution analysis, correlation and multivariate testing

  • Building models for imbalanced, and time series data sets. Bias/Variance tradeoff. Model quality metrics like R-squared, AUC, outlier detection and removal

  • Experience implementing and conducting machine learning

  • Experience in cloud base data management and analysis environment (Google Cloud Platform)

  • Advanced degree in statistics, mathematics, or computer programming

  • 3+ years' experience as a Data Scientist

  • 5+ years' experience analyzing large data sets and performing transformations across a multitude of disparate data sources

  • Demonstrated track record analyzing data, quantitative methods, organizing data, statistical testing, visualization, developing compelling executive dashboards, and presenting to stakeholder groups

  • Clearly communicate and present data findings to stakeholder groups


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform

  • Experience with Google TensorFlow

  • A portfolio of projects (GitHub, papers, etc.)

  • As the primary analyst for certain business units within DDM, this person must be able to work independently and win over the stakeholders with accurate business insights produced within requested deadlines and confidently presented with an understanding of context

  • Must be a self-starter who can quickly master the data platforms and environment

  • This person must be self-motivated with intellectual curiosity and a deep passion for learning, teaching and developing new skills.
